Our Behaviour Curriculum is a carefully planned programme that teaches children the positive behaviours and attitudes they need to succeed both in school and beyond. At the heart of our curriculum are our core values of Love, Respect and Ambition, which underpin everything we do. Alongside these values, we actively develop the key learning behaviours of Active Listening, Resilience and Pride, helping every child become a confident, respectful and successful learner.
We believe that excellent behaviour should be taught in the same way as any other important skill. Through weekly behaviour lessons, assemblies and daily classroom routines, pupils are explicitly taught what positive behaviour looks like, why it matters and how it helps them to thrive. Staff identify, teach, model and practise expected behaviours with children, ensuring that everyone understands our school rules: Be Ready, Be Responsible and Be Kind.
Throughout the year, our Behaviour Curriculum focuses on specific themes that support pupils in different aspects of school life. These include moving around school safely and respectfully, being ready to learn, demonstrating good manners, meeting expectations at lunchtimes, participating positively in assemblies and representing the school with pride beyond the school gates. By revisiting and reinforcing these themes, children develop the habits and character traits that enable them to make positive choices in a range of situations.
Our approach is proactive rather than reactive. We create opportunities for pupils to practise expected behaviours, celebrate success and build positive relationships across the school community. By consistently modelling high standards and providing clear expectations, we help children develop self-discipline, responsibility and respect for others. This shared commitment from staff, pupils and parents/carers creates a calm, purposeful environment where everyone can learn, achieve and flourish.
Ultimately, our Behaviour Curriculum prepares children not only for success at Thornton Primary School but also for life beyond the classroom. We want every pupil to leave us as a kind, respectful and ambitious individual who understands how their actions impact others and who is proud to contribute positively to their community.
